We started with our own lack of gardening knowledge by studying nature, and came across the Back to Eden film. That led us to get loads of mulch and watch closely what it does to the soil.

It took years of observing — even doing the wrong thing, like putting fresh, not-yet-cooked mulch on young trees, only to watch them stunt for four years for lack of nutrients. The lesson was simple: mulch the soil, cover the ground as nature does everywhere on the planet. The soil is a living organism, and it covers itself with whatever it can grow — forests with leaves, paddocks with grass, even deserts with salt bush.

That idea of soil as an organism grew in our minds and led us to make an organic, mineral-rich compost. So we opened the “can of worms” — the microbes of nematode, fungi, bacteria and protozoa, then the earthworms, and the pH that tells its own story. When you lay our cooked (naturally pasteurised) mulch to the correct thickness, it creates its own compost in the integration layer, promoting the healthy bacteria and fungi the soil takes up to impart minerals and give plant roots a base to thrive.
